The Online WebTip
Thanks to the extremely special integrated Two-Way Dialog capabilities, the coordinator can securely ask questions or send reward information back to the tipster through the same secure and encrypted interface. These capabilities also enable the tipster to return anytime and add more information to their tip.
The Phone Call
Calls come into the local Crime Stoppers tips line. This phone does not show caller ID or record conversations. The Crime Stoppers coordinator takes the information, does some initial checking, and then gives it to the investigating officer. People can call about any publicized request for information, like the “Crime of the Week” or any other crime they know about.
By ensuring caller confidentiality, Crime Stoppers provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can share information without fear of retaliation. The program incentivizes callers who might otherwise be reluctant to provide information by giving cash rewards for information that results in a felony arrest or indictment.
Structure and Funding of Crime Stoppers
Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization led by a civilian community board of directors, which oversees financial and promotional activities. The board plays a crucial role in the program’s success by encouraging community involvement.
Crime Stoppers relies on donations and fundraising, not tax dollars. A diverse community board of directors meets monthly to review arrests and determine rewards, which can reach $5,000. The reward money comes from the generosity of concerned citizens and businesses. Rewards are distributed privately.
Does Crime Stoppers Work?
Crime Stoppers will undoubtedly remain in existence. Police have acknowledged it as a legitimate and valuable tool for conducting investigations, and based on the overwhelming response from the public, people have come to view it as a more acceptable way to provide information than more conventional means.
